Description
This year I took a class in scientific illustration, where we carefully studied biological subjects and tried to reproduce them as cleanly and accurately as possible. Going back to this tight style after doing so much digital painting was a little uncomfortable, but I would say my attention to detail has improved a lot as a result.
If you have never seen pictures of Socotra Island, go check it out right now. Seriously. The plants and trees on Socotra Island in the Arabian Sea have been genetically isolated from the outside for so long they have evolved to look totally different than anything else on Earth.
"Bottle trees" grow huge, bulbous trunks underneath small tufts of branches which give them a hilariously awkward look when full-grown. This species is called the Desert Rose - presumably because it lives on desert islands and looks like a rose...? My illustration of this species is based totally off photos because I unfortunately couldn't find one of these IRL despite the fact that they are popular houseplants.
